SHORT SUMMARY: It was time to settle the score in “the Group of death”. Tension was high. Netherlands had already won the group with 6 points but the remaining three teams (Norway, England and Germany) all had a chance to claim a place in the semis.

Norway and Germany had a stalemate at half-time with 0-0 while Netherland continued their dominance with a 3-0 lead against England. We thought this meant that Norway was 2nd in the group with equal points with England and Germany and a better goal difference. However the league table of both sources we checked (VG Live and UEFA) had England as 2nd. The only logical conclusion to that was that the number of goals counted before the goal difference, which is a practice we have never seen before.

Anyways it didn’t matter in the end. Norway took the lead after their MVP of the the tournament in our opinion, Sondre Milian Granaas, scored a nice goal after an assist from Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit in the 72nd minute. The Norwegian fans who had dominated the soundtrack in the stands throughout the match went wild and had their eyes on a spectacular place in the semis.

Germany, who had created very little throughout the match, seemed to finally get a wake-up call and changed their tempo and intensity completely. After 85 minutes Assan Ouedraogo curled the ball in the right corner with a spectacular shot. One minute into stoppage time their MVP of the tournament so far in our opinion, Said El Mala, made it 2-1, claiming the 2nd place in a dramatic ending to Group B.

And as an even shorter summary of the short summary? Norway U19 can be proud of their efforts in Romania no doubt! It will be exciting to see if any of the players here will get the call-up for the U20 World Cup in Chile in September.

1: Daniel Gjerde Sætren RATING: 6

One of Norway’s best players in the first 90 minutes making a handful of qualified saves, but gave Germany the 2-1 goal in the 91st minute when he lost control of what seemed to be an easy ball. It went straight to El Mala who had got an easy finish. Couldn’t do anything with 1-1. A very solid tournament from the Sogndal goalkeeper.

2: Fanuel Ghebreyohannes RATING 5

Solid. Some good runs from his right back position. Tamed El Mala in a good way. Taken off at half-time.

3: Matias Øren RATING: 7

Good positioning, won most of his challenges both on the ground and in the air, excellent passing. Very good game.

5: Jonathan Vonheim Norbye RATING: 6

Had good control together with Øren in Norway’s central defence until 85 minutes was played. Extremely good in the air. Great timing. Brave with the ball most of the time.

13:  Karsten Ekorness RATING: 6

Has his strength 1 vs. 1 defensively. Very aggressive and excellent pressure. Not so much offensively but a solid match from Stabæk’s left back.

20: Jesper Reitan-Sunde RATING: 5

Very loyal in his defensive work. An explosive winger with good balance and control. Saw little of the ball and didn’t manage to get himself into many dangerous positions offensively. Seemed to get a knock a went off after 68 minutes.

6: Andreas Heredia-Randen 6

His best match of the tournament. Intelligent movement and passing. “Never” lost the ball. Advanced past his opponents a few times but needs to become a bit braver in that part of his game in order to take the next step. Won several challenges in the air.

18: Lars Bjørnerud Remmem RATING: 5

Not as dominant as in the match against England. Covers a lot of distance but was a bit anonymous today.

11: Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit RATING: 5

Nice assist on 1-0 but didn’t have many other highlights. Gets into dangerous positions a few times and has his strengt 1 vs. 1 offensively. Needs to get more involved throughout the matches.

8: Sondre Milian Granaas RATING: 7

Norway U19 plays a bit of a hybrid between 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 4-4-1-1 and Granaas is the player who sets the tone. Very explosive in the central midfield. Great 1st touch, quick, brave, excellent work rate, good dribling, intelligent passing. Gave Norway the lead 1-0 with a smart finish. Norway’s best player in this tournament in our opinion.

7: Julian Bakkeli Gonstad RATING: 4

Became awfully lonely against two strong and skilled German stoppers. An ungrateful job, but there is no doubt that he does the job. ALWAYS works extremely hard. Didn’t manage to hold up the ball much today and when he got it he rarely managed to create something or give it to a teammate. Needs more creativity and flair to succeed 1 vs. 1 offensively on this level but nevertheless an exciting prospect as a “defensive forward”.

15: Mikkel Hope: 5

Came on in the 46th minute on the right back. Moved to the left with 15 minutes left of the match. More dominant against England and Netherlands but an OK match from the Haugesund defender. Exciting full-back with good stamina, acceleration and a good left foot.

Troy Nyhammer, Luca Høyland, William Osnes-Ringen and Niklas Kemp Fuglestad also came on for Norway but didn’t play long enough to get a rating (minimum 30 minutes).
